What Grass-Fed Really Means in Your Yogurt

Posted on

The words “grass-fed” show up on a lot of labels these days, but they do not always mean the same thing from one product to the next. Since it is right at the heart of how we make our yogurt, we thought it was worth explaining what it actually means when we say it, and why it shapes everything from taste to nutrition.

Cows on Pasture, April to October

At its simplest, grass-fed means cows spend their days grazing on pasture. The small family farms we work with on Vancouver Island manage over a thousand acres of green pasture, where the cows graze freely from spring through fall.

When the grazing season ends, their diet stays grass-based through fresh, dried, and fermented grass with only 15% grain rations to provide extra energy for milking and the Canadian west coast winters.

Why Grass-Fed Milk Is Different

The way a cow is fed changes the milk it produces. Research has shown that milk from pasture-raised cows tends to carry higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and D compared to milk from cows raised indoors on grain.

Those are meaningful nutrients, and they matter for growing kids and adults alike. You can also taste the difference. Whole milk, full fat grass-fed milk makes a yogurt that is rich and full in flavour, which is a big part of why ours tastes the way it does.

Knowing Every Farm by Name

Grass-fed is only part of the story. Just as important to us is knowing exactly where our milk comes from. Every batch of Tree Island yogurt starts with fresh, whole milk delivered from small family farms we know personally, right here on Vancouver Island.

There are no milk powders and no reconstituted shortcuts. It is a short, honest journey from pasture to our kitchen to your table, and we like it that way.

Caring for the Land

The farms we partner with think beyond the herd. Many use no-till practices, which means they do not plow or disturb the soil. Over time this builds healthier soil, holds water better, captures carbon, and supports the wider web of life on the farm.

When you choose a grass-fed yogurt made this way, you are supporting a kind of farming that looks after the land for the long term, not just the season ahead.

Simple, the Way It Should Be

Grass-fed, Canadian, and made in small batches. That is the short version of what goes into every container. We keep our sugar low, skip the fillers and thickeners, and let good milk do the work.
