Now that Tree Island Yogurt is available at select Costco locations, we’ve been getting some questions about storage.
How long does yogurt actually last? Can you freeze it? What’s the best way to keep it fresh when you’re buying larger quantities?
These are good questions, and ones we’re happy to answer. Whether you’re stocking up at Costco, buying our eco family sizes, or just trying to make your yogurt last a little longer, here’s what you need to know.
How Long Does Yogurt Last?
Unopened yogurt will stay fresh until the “best before” date printed on the container, as long as it’s stored properly in the fridge. Once opened, yogurt typically stays good for about 7-10 days if kept refrigerated at or below 4°C (40°F).
The key is consistent cold storage. Yogurt doesn’t like temperature swings, so try to minimize how long it sits out on the counter. The longer it stays at room temperature, the faster it will spoil.
Signs Your Yogurt Is Still Fresh
Good yogurt:
- Within the Best Before date
- Package is unopened and kept from 0-4 degrees Celsius
- Yogurt looks clean
- Yogurt smells clean
Yogurt has a pH of 4.4 or less, making it an acidic environment. Pasteurization kills bad bacteria that may come from the farm and yogurt making introduces good bacteria that make the yogurt full of probiotics!
Yogurt that goes “off” is most likely to happen for these key reasons:
- Yogurt is not kept cold – check your fridge temperature, even a few degrees above 4 will shorten shelf life
- Your fridge needs a clean out – that old piece of black and blue fruit at the back of the fridge has bacteria that adds spoilage mold to air circulating around your other food!
- Someone ate from the container and double dipped! – Yes, even if you love them, it’s not the right thing to let them do!
Quick tips to assess if your yogurt is past its prime:
- Date – Past the best-before date
- Visual – Shows signs of mold, usually grey or red coloured (discard immediately)
- Smell – Something unpleasant and yeasty, reminds you of bread or beer smell
- Check – Did anyone eat from the container? Bacteria from your mouth can be the biggest culprit!
- Taste – Save this one for last. If it tastes off, throw it away.
If in doubt, throw it out. No one wants to waste food, but if you feel unsure and have a funny feeling, let it go and dispose of the food. Keep your peace of mind and move on.
If you see a little liquid on top, don’t worry, that’s just the whey separating naturally. You can either stir it back in or pour it off. Both are fine.
Best Storage Practices for Yogurt
- Keep it cold: Store yogurt on a shelf in the main part of your fridge, not in the door. The door experiences more temperature fluctuations, which can shorten yogurt’s shelf life.
- Seal it tight: Always close the lid completely after each use to prevent exposure to air and bacteria.
- Use clean utensils: When scooping yogurt, use a clean spoon every time. This prevents contamination and keeps the yogurt fresher longer.
- Don’t double-dip: If you’re serving yogurt to a group, portion out what you need into a separate bowl rather than having everyone dip into the main container.
Can You Freeze Yogurt?
Yes, you can freeze yogurt, but it will change the texture. Freezing causes the proteins to separate slightly, so when it thaws, the yogurt may be grainy or watery rather than smooth and creamy.
Best Uses for Frozen Yogurt:
- Smoothies: You won’t notice the texture change
- Baking: Works great in muffins, cakes, or pancakes
- Frozen yogurt bark or popsicles: Delicious intentionally frozen treats (See recipes)
If you do freeze yogurt, portion it into smaller containers or ice cube trays so you can thaw only what you need. It will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months.
Tips for Bulk Buyers (Costco & Eco Family Sizes)
Buying in bulk saves money and cuts down on packaging, but it only makes sense if you can use the yogurt before it spoils. Here’s how to make it work:
- Plan your portions: If you’re buying a large container, decide how you’ll use it throughout the week. Breakfast parfaits? Baking? Smoothies? Snacks? Having a plan helps you stay on track.
- Use the eco family size for everyday eating: Our 1.5kg containers are perfect for families who go through yogurt quickly. They’re still bulk-sized but manageable for regular use.
- Freeze half if needed: If you’ve bought more than you can finish in 10 days, freeze half right away. Thaw it later for baking or smoothies.
- Rotate your stock: When you buy new yogurt, move older containers to the front of the fridge so you use them first.
